About the ‘Baumhaus-Project’
The ‘Baumhaus- Project’ was created in 2007 by the German-Chinese businesswoman Wei Qian and the university teacher Professor Dr. Peter Jochimsen. Every year ‘Baumhaus’ sends young German volunteers from ages 18 to 28 abroad to work in social or educational projects. The ‘Baumhaus-project’ pursues two principal purposes.
School education for children in poor parts of the world
In developing countries and emerging countries there are many families for which the education of their children is too expensive. Even if the state schools are partly free of charge, the families often have a lack of money for school uniforms, learning material and food. Frequently a two class system develops itself in the area of Education: Those who can afford it, send their children to private schools.Public schools frequently don’t have the financial means to hire enough well trained teachers and to equip classrooms sufficiently and keep them in good condition. The ‘Baumhaus- Project’ supports the school education and social integration of disadvantaged children.
Cultural exchange
The young volunteers from Germany are given the opportunity to get to know an unfamiliar culture. At the same moment the local people gain an insight into life in Germany by communicating with the volunteers. From cooperation between the volunteers and locals arises the opportunity to gain further insight into complex social injustices in poor regions of the world and to better understand them. They also get the chance to develop a better sense of responsibility and to cause through small, careful steps positive changes. They also get the occasion to enrich their own individual development through their intercultural experiences.
Together with supporting people and materially assisting friends, the project is run by the donator, the ‘Peter Jochimsen Foundation g’. If there is a possibility, public funds are also raised, like the programs ‘Jugend im Ausland’ and ‘weltwärts’, the voluntary service for supporting development of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
